Who are we?
• Yorkshire Evening Post Brass.
What Are We?
• In the musical world, we would be described as a "Ten Piece Brass Ensemble" or more precisely, a "Brass Tentet".
• We are not a Brass Band.
What is the history of the group?
• We formed in 2002 when Yorkshire Post Newspapers asked a few former members of the disbanded Yorkshire Evening Post Brass Band if they wanted to form a small brass ensemble.
• We are no longer sponsored by The Yorkshire Evening Post but we are still proud to bear thier name.
Where are we based?
• We are currently based in Allerton Bywater, near Leeds.
What instruments do we play?
• The group comprises four Bb Trumpets, a French Horn, three Tenor Trombones, a Bass Trombone, an Eb Tuba and Percussion.
• Our Trumpet players also play Eb and Piccolo Trumpets, Cornet and Flugel Horn depending on the requirements of the music.
• Our Trombone players can double-up on Alto Trombone and Euphonium as needed.
• We can add to or vary the ensemble to suit the needs of the engagement.
Who are the musicians?
• All our players are amateur or semi professional musicians who give their services free of charge.
Who have we worked with?
• We have had the opportunity and pleasure to work with many exceptional musicians such as Murray Grieg and Chris Houlding, Principal Trumpet and former Principal Trombone of the Orchestra of Opera North respectively, Simon Lindley who is Leeds City Organist and a number of musical directors and players from top Brass Bands.
• Our concerts are often shared with other groups or individuals. For more details of who we have worked with, please look through the Engagements section.
What music do we play?
• Our repertoire ranges from jazz, swing, pop and rock right through to chamber music, classics and opera.
• We have had several arrangements written especially for us and are commissioning new works and arrangements for use in future concerts. Several of our players have made special arrangements for the group.
• We try to appeal to all audiences and so our concert programmes are varied and interesting.
Where do we play?
• We have played in all types of venues, from tents in fields to churches and large concert halls. Some unusual venues include a trailer towed by a tractor, a platform at Leeds Railway Station and a Victorian Swimming Baths (to an audience who were swimming)!
• We have played as part of the Leeds International Concert Season as well as entertaining guests at an 80th birthday party.
• We are available for private functions, birthdays, anniversaries and weddings.
• We are pleased to have had many venues and organisations book us again for future concerts.
What are our goals?
• To promote and bring high quality live music to the people of Leeds, Yorkshire and the surrounding areas at a reasonable price.
